Help Me Make It Through The Night
Today I started Loving You Again
Help Me Make It Through The Night
By Kris Kristofferson

Many in Nashville were surprised that Sammi Smith would cut this song because it seemed too racy but she
simply saw it as a beautifully written plea for understanding and comfort because there was no real line drawn
that she were cheating .( a taboo that major labels had yet to break)
She cut it.
Sammi beat Bobby Bare, who had also fallen in love with the song, into the recording studio and shipped her
version in the winter of 1970.  It hit the charts in December and was a runaway favorite as single of the year in
1971.
In his songs lyrics Kris revealed a cowboys love of freedom and a drifter’s lack of commitment to
relationships.  ( he captured the culture of the sixties in his songs )  In his lyrics he also admitted he needed a
God, but he also desired the gratification that only a lover could give.  What Kris really brought to songwriting
was a more complex way to deal with emotions.

Today I Started Loving You Again
by Merle Haggard & Bonnie Owens

The year was 1968.  Merle had been married to Bonnie Owens a little over a year.  They had been on the
road for 93 days straight and were about to take a five-day break.  They were at the airport just standing
there waiting for their plane when Merle suddenly turned to Bonnie and said, “you know I started loving you
again” and Bonnie said, “ Do you know what you just said” and Merle replied, “Yea, and I’ll write it later”!
Well, three weeks later back on the road again Bonnie was out getting some burgers while Merl stayed in
the motel.  Merle recalls that, “Just as I finished the last word the door flies open and Bonnie came in with a
sack of chow.  Merle told her to sit down I want you to hear something.  After Merle finished singing his
song Bonnie said, “I don’t think that needs anything done to it, except just record it”.   That’s what Merle
did the next time he was in the studio for a recording session.
